“Where to stay in Gramado” is solved in two steps: first the area, then the type of accommodation. In the 2025 official survey, 64% of visitors stayed in a hotel, 13% in a holiday home or apartment and 12% in a pousada (guesthouse).
The areas at a glance
| Area | Pros | Watch out for | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown | Everything on foot: Rua Coberta, restaurants, shops | Rates tend to be higher; lively at night | No car, short stays, first trip |
| Neighbourhoods near downtown (e.g. Planalto, Bavária) | Quieter, still close to the centre | Some streets are steep; check the real walking distance | Couples, families, a balance of both |
| Avenida das Hortênsias area | Access to the attractions along the avenue | Relies more on a car or ride-hailing | Travellers with a car |
| Rural and outlying areas | Nature and peace | A car is practically essential | Romantic and restful trips |
How to decide
- No car? Stay downtown or very close to it. See Gramado without a car.
- Travelling with children or a baby? Prioritise being close to what you want to do and roomy accommodation. See Gramado with kids and Gramado with a baby.
- Romantic trip? Places further out can be worth it — if you have a car. See romantic Gramado.
- Tight budget? Compare the total price, including transport. The calculator helps, and so does Gramado on a budget.
- Thinking of staying in Canela? Read Gramado or Canela first.
Hotel, pousada or apartment?
- Hotel: the choice of most visitors. Worth it for the facilities (reception, breakfast, sometimes parking and leisure areas) and convenience on short stays.
- Pousada (guesthouse): usually smaller and more personal. Suits couples and anyone wanting a quiet atmosphere; check that rooms have heating for winter.
- Holiday house or apartment: good for families and groups and for longer stays. A kitchen helps save on meals, but check the cleaning fee, check-in rules and parking.
Accommodation on peak dates
July, long weekends and the Natal Luz season concentrate demand. On those dates, book well ahead, choose rates with flexible cancellation and watch for minimum stays — many properties require two or more nights at weekends and on public holidays. If downtown options are expensive or sold out, compare nearby neighbourhoods before moving to another town: the cost of daily travel counts too.
Before you book
- Check the real distance to Rua Coberta on a map — “close to downtown” is an elastic description.
