Gramado or Canela: where to stay and how to combine both
The two towns are neighbours and usually feature in the same trip. The real question is: where is your base?
Updated on October 2, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original
Gramado and Canela are neighbouring towns in the Serra Gaúcha, and many people visit both on the same trip. When planning, the practical question is not which is “better”, but where to stay and how many days to give each.
When to choose Gramado as your base
- You want to stroll around downtown in the evening, with restaurants, shops and a lively atmosphere.
- Your trip revolves around events such as the Natal Luz.
- You will not have a car and want to do almost everything on foot — see Gramado without a car.
How to fit Canela in
If you are in Gramado, Canela works well as a day trip. By car the journey is short; without one, a taxi, ride-hailing app or organised tour will do. See the full plan in Canela day trip from Gramado.
How many days for each
- Up to 3 days: focus on Gramado.
- 4 or 5 days: set aside one day for Canela — that is the format of our 4-day itinerary.
- 7 days: you can explore Canela and other towns in the region at a relaxed pace — see the 7-day itinerary.
See every attraction in town, by area, in things to do in Canela.
