Canela day trip from Gramado

Canela is right next to Gramado and fits into one well-planned day. Here is how to plan the journey and the order of your stops.

Updated on October 2, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

If you are staying in Gramado, Canela is the most natural day trip: the two towns are neighbours and the journey is short. This guide looks at Canela from the point of view of someone based in Gramado.

How to get there

  • Your own or a rental car: the most flexible way to visit sights that are spread out. Check parking at each stop.
  • Taxi or ride-hailing app: works well for one or two stops. Arrange the return in advance on busy days.
  • Organised tour: agencies in Gramado sell tours with transport included. Compare what is included (tickets, free time, stops).

How to organise the day

  1. Start early with the outdoor sights that are further out, while the light and weather are at their best.
  2. Have lunch in Canela and leave the town centre — home to the stone cathedral (Catedral de Pedra) — for the afternoon.
  3. Return to Gramado for dinner, without rushing.

Canela’s best-known sights include the Catedral de Pedra and the Cascata do Caracol (Caracol waterfall). Check each attraction’s official channels for opening hours, tickets and visiting rules before planning the day.

When it is not worth it

With only 2 or 3 days, you will probably get more out of focusing on Gramado. On days of heavy rain or thick fog, scenic sights lose much of their appeal: swap the day if you can.
